Red Sox vs Yankees, Dodgers vs Giants, Cowboys vs New York Giants. These teams have something in common. They have a common enemy, a rival! And now you can add another hot rivalry to this list. The San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks!
A few years back, the NFC West was a joke and the laughing stock of the NFL. Not anymore! Pete Carroll took over the head coaching job in Seattle back in 2010 and Jim Harbaugh took over in San Francisco in 2011. It is almost scary how both of these teams have mirrored each other in the last few years.
The 49ers drafted a young quarterback out of Nevada named Colin Kaepernick in 2011. Kaeapernick only played a couple of series in his rookie year as he sat and watched Alex Smith run the QB spot. But then came 2012. Alex Smith got injured, Kaepernick stepped in at quarterback and the rest was history. Colin Kaepernick lead the Niners all the way to the Super bowl and almost won it all.
Meanwhile up in Seattle, Pete Carroll signed Matt Flynn as his starting quarterback during the off season leading into 2012. Then came the 2012 NFL Draft. The Seahawks struck gold when they drafted a young quarterback out of Wisconsin named Russell Wilson. At the time, Seahawks fans assumed that Russell Wilson would be Matt Flynn’s backup and would ride the bench. But something happened! Russell Wilson played so well in the 2012 preseason that he beat out Flynn and won the starting quarterback job. Now, Matt Flynn is in Oakland playing for the Raiders. Wilson had a great rookie season and lead the Seahawks to a playoff win over Robert Griffin the third and the Washington Redskins.
Both the 49ers and Seahawks have great defenses, a great young quarterback and two head coaches that really don’t like each other. This could turn out to be one of the greatest rivalries in sports. If we’re lucky, these two teams will be fighting for the NFC West title for years to come. The first battle begins in Week 2 of the 2013 season when the 49ers will play the Seahawks in Seattle.
